Custom Canopy Solutions
At Douglas, we can design, fabricate and install a customised PVC tensioned canopy to provide your home with a waterproof and UV-protected outdoor living area.
Our specialist range of translucent PVCs are strong, waterproof and surface treated to prevent dirt adhesion, plus they block harmful UV rays (offering 99% UVA/B protection) while still retaining natural light.
Fully customisable, our curved canopies can be tensioned onto existing curved or sloping structures, or we can craft a bespoke frame to create your ideal outdoor living area. For ultimate protection, outdoor blinds can be added, protecting you and your family from sun, wind and rain.
Got an existing pergola?
We can also craft a shade solution for a pergola that is already attached to your deck or your home.

FAQs

SPECS, AESTHETICS & COMFORT
What sizes and spans are possible?
Curved canopy systems can span up to 6m at any length, with posts typically spaced up to 3.5m apart. Pergolas can be configured for almost any outdoor living space, from compact patios to larger alfresco dining areas.
What colour options are available?
Frames are powder-coated in any Dulux colour, and fabrics are available in a wide range of translucent or solid PVC finishes. This means you can complement your home or create a design feature.
+ MORE
Are pergolas and canopies waterproof?
Yes. The PVC roof skin is fully waterproof, supported by an engineered aluminium frame. Curved canopies allow water run-off to the sides, while guttering can be integrated if required.
What materials are used?
- High-grade New Zealand extruded aluminium frames (no rust)
- Stainless steel fittings for durability
- Waterproof PVC fabrics – either translucent for light or solid colours for shade
What does the space feel like underneath?
Curved canopy systems create a unique light-filled environment. The translucent PVC diffuses natural light, giving a soft glow while still blocking harmful UV. Inside your home, canopies help reduce glare and heat while allowing plenty of daylight through. At night, the canopy’s curved profile creates a sheltered, inviting space for entertaining.
How much does a pergola or curved canopy cost?
Every pergola or canopy we build is custom-designed, so costs vary with size, structure, and options such as integrated screens. Share a photo and some basic measurements, or contact our Hastings showroom for a ballpark estimate. We’ll confirm exact pricing once we’ve assessed your site in Napier, Hastings, or CHB.

INTEGRATIONS & TECH
Can I add blinds, lighting, heaters & home automation to a roof system?
Yes. Roof systems can be enhanced with additional features like blinds for weather protection and privacy, integrated LED lighting, outdoor heaters, and even smart home automation. We’ll discuss these options with you during the design stage to ensure everything works seamlessly together.

PROCESS & INSTALLATION
How long does installation take?
Most pergola and canopy systems are installed within 2–3 days by our Douglas team.
Can you work to tight deadlines?
Yes. If you have a set deadline, tell us early and we’ll do our best to deliver. We’re experienced at coordinating with other contractors to keep projects on track.
+ MORE
Do you charge for consultations or quotes?
Initial consultations are typically free of charge. For detailed design work or complex assessments, we’ll advise upfront if fees apply.
Can you work with existing designs or plans?
Yes. We regularly collaborate with architects, builders, and project managers to integrate pergolas and canopies into new builds or renovations.
Who installs your pergolas and canopies?
Our own Douglas installation team handles every job — never contractors. We’ll let you know who to expect, and you can meet our installers on our team page.
Can you coordinate with other trades?
Yes. We often work alongside builders, electricians, and landscapers to ensure your canopy project integrates seamlessly with other works.
How accurate are the measurements?
Every pergola or canopy is fabricated to the millimetre, ensuring a perfect fit.

Do I need council consent?
In Hawke’s Bay, pergolas or canopies under 50m² often don’t require consent. Larger projects or commercial sites may need approvals. Our team will confirm what applies and support you through the process.

Douglas provides a 2-year workmanship and labour warranty, plus:
- 10-year warranty on powder coating
- 10-year warranty on PVC fabrics
- 5-year warranty on structural aluminium
Care and user guides are provided at installation, and you can view our full Warranty Statement here.
+ MORE
What are the environmental credentials?
Pergolas and canopies are designed to last, reducing the need for replacement. The aluminium frames are recyclable, and PVC fabrics are engineered for durability and UV resistance.
As it stands, any outdoor fabrics used in roof systems, shades, or awnings are not currently recyclable in New Zealand at end-of-life (this applies to our products and anyone else’s). Our suppliers are known to be working on end-of-life solutions, and many of our fabrics are manufactured under stringent EU environmental and health regulations, covering the full product life cycle. If you’d like details for the specific fabric you’re considering, we can help you check the supplier’s information.
Where our products really add value is in the longevity of the product – with Douglas you are buying a long-term, durable solution.
Where are pergolas and canopies made?
These are proprietary Douglas systems — designed and fabricated locally in Hawke’s Bay. We also work closely with local trade partners to deliver quality builds.
Can I see a pergola or canopy in the showroom?
Yes. Our Hastings showroom includes a full-size curved canopy display, so you can experience the feel of the space and view fabric and frame colours in person.
Have you won awards for outdoor living projects?
Yes. Douglas is a multi-award-winning Hawke’s Bay company, recognised nationally and internationally for excellence in outdoor living solutions including canopies, awnings, and roof systems.
One such winner for a Pergola was the tensioned canopy installation at Co-op Café in Pakowhai, which won the ATANZ Award for Excellence.
