FAQs

SPECS, AESTHETICS & COMFORT
What sizes and spans are possible?
Are retractable awnings waterproof?
Retractable awnings are showerproof, similar to a quality deck umbrella. They are ideal for shading patios, decks, and windows. If waterproofing is essential, we can recommend alternative roof systems.

What colour options are available?
You can choose from an extensive range of acrylic canvas colours and patterns, designed to coordinate with your home or business. Frames and cassettes are available in white, silver, anthracite, or black, with some colours indent-ordered for specific models.
Fabrics are available to browse in our Hastings showroom.
What fabrics are available for retractable awnings?
We offer a wide range of durable acrylic canvas fabrics designed for outdoor performance. All are UV-stable, fade-resistant, and water-repellent. Visit our Hastings showroom to browse swatches and find the fabric that suits your style.
What does the space feel like under a retractable awning?
Awnings provide comfortable shade while allowing airflow, keeping the area cooler on hot Hawke’s Bay days. With their retractable design, you can enjoy sun when you want it and shade when you need it.
How much does a retractable awning cost?
Every awning is custom-made, so pricing depends on the size, fabric, model, and installation requirements. If you share a photo and some basic measurements or contact our Hastings showroom, we can give you a ballpark figure. For an accurate quote, our team will visit your site in Napier, Hastings, or CHB to measure and discuss options.
How long will a retractable awning last?
With correct care, high-quality retractable awnings can last many years. Fabric life typically extends 8–12 years depending on exposure, while frames and mechanisms can last significantly longer with maintenance.
How do I clean and care for a retractable awning?
We recommend regular gentle cleaning to extend the life of your awning:
- Brush off dirt and debris with a soft broom.
- Hose down with clean water.
- Use a mild detergent and soft brush for marks.
- Rinse thoroughly and let dry fully before retracting.
We’ll provide full user and care guides at installation.

Do you charge for consultations or quotes?
Initial consultations are typically free of charge. If a project requires detailed design work or complex assessments, we’ll advise you upfront if fees apply. This is unlikely to be the case for awnings.

Our Douglas team carries out all installations. Installers are professional, friendly, and well-known across Hawke’s Bay. We’ll let you know in advance who to expect on site, and you can meet the team on our website.
Can you reskin or repair my awning?
Yes. If your awning frame is still in good condition, we can replace the fabric to refresh its look and extend its lifespan. We also offer servicing and adjustments to keep your awning working smoothly.
Who can I expect to come to my site?
Our installers are part of the Douglas team – friendly, professional, and well-known across Hawke’s Bay. We’ll let you know in advance who is scheduled for your job, so you know exactly who to expect. You can also meet the team here.
Do you employ your own installation team or use contractors?
Installation is carried out by our own trained Douglas team, not contractors. This means you’ll always know who is coming to your property and you’ll receive consistent quality and service.
Can you work with other trades?
Yes. We often coordinate with builders, landscapers, electricians, and architects to ensure your awning project integrates seamlessly with your outdoor space.
Can you include custom metal fabrication in the project?
Yes. We can design and supply custom aluminium frames, powder-coated in your chosen colour, or adapt your existing pergola structure.

What are the environmental credentials?
Retractable awnings are designed to last, reducing the need for frequent replacement. Frames are made from recyclable aluminium and marine-grade components for long-term durability.
As it stands, any outdoor fabrics used in roof systems, shades, or awnings are not currently recyclable in New Zealand at end-of-life (this applies to our products and anyone else’s). Our suppliers are known to be working on end-of-life solutions, and many of our fabrics are manufactured under stringent EU environmental and health regulations, covering the full product life cycle. If you’d like details for the specific fabric you’re considering, we can help you check the supplier’s information.
Some of our typical suppliers include:
View Sunbrella fabrics’ Sustainability Statement & Credentials, which includes GREENGUARD Gold Certification for healthy indoor air quality, and ISO 14001 for Environmental Management.
Mehler PVC , which includes their Eco-Care commitment for product life-cycle, REACH compliance and phthalate-free products.
Recasens Recacril, including REACH compliance and phthalate-free products.
Where our products really add value is in the longevity of the product – with Douglas you are buying a long-term, durable solution.
Where are retractable awnings made?
Llaza awnings are European-designed in Spain and manufactured offshore to their specifications. At Douglas, we are the authorised Hawke’s Bay dealer, fabricating and installing each awning locally with support from our trusted suppliers.
Have you won awards for outdoor living projects?
Yes. Douglas is a multi-award-winning Hawke’s Bay company, recognised both nationally and internationally for excellence in outdoor living projects, including retractable awnings.
How do I clean and care for a retractable awning?
- Clean with mild soapy water – avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Rinse thoroughly to prevent soap build-up.
- Allow fabric to dry fully before retracting.
- Check frames and moving parts periodically for smooth operation.
