FAQs

SPECS, AESTHETICS & COMFORT
What sizes and spans are possible?
Glazed roofs can span up to 6m. Posts are typically 100mm square with up to 5m spacing, and rafters are usually at 600mm or 750mm centres. Larger areas are achieved by adding extra modules.
Do I need council consent?
In Hawke’s Bay, a glazed roof under 30m² usually does not require consent. Larger structures, or those in certain zones, may need it. We’ll confirm what applies in your case and can coordinate with other trades if required.
+ MORE
What colour options are available?
Frames can be powder-coated in the full Dulux Duralloy range, giving you plenty of choice to complement or contrast with your home’s style.
Are glazed roofs waterproof?
Yes. The polycarbonate glazing is fully waterproof and blocks harmful UV rays. Integrated gutters manage rainwater, and we can add drip rails or downpipes where needed.
What materials are used?
- Locally extruded aluminium framing for strength and corrosion resistance
- Stainless steel fittings for durability
- Imported polycarbonate glazing, available in clear, grey tint, or opal translucent
What does the space feel like underneath?
Glazed roofs create bright, comfortable outdoor rooms. Clear glazing provides maximum light and lets you see the stars at night. Grey tint reduces glare and heat, while opal translucent softens daylight for a diffused, welcoming feel. They also help shade adjoining windows, reducing heat inside while keeping rooms naturally light. You can compare all three glazing options in our Hastings showroom.
How much does a glazed roof cost?
Every glazed roof is custom-designed, so pricing depends on size, structure, glazing type, and site conditions. Share a photo and some basic measurements, or contact our Hastings showroom for a ballpark estimate. For accurate pricing, we’ll visit your site in Napier, Hastings, or CHB to assess and provide advice.

INTEGRATIONS & TECH
Can I add blinds, lighting, heaters & home automation to a roof system?
Yes. Roof systems can be enhanced with additional features like blinds for weather protection and privacy, integrated LED lighting, outdoor heaters, and even smart home automation. We’ll discuss these options with you during the design stage to ensure everything works seamlessly together.

PROCESS & INSTALLATION
How long does installation take?
Installation typically takes 2–3 days, depending on size and site access. We’ll confirm once your design is finalised.
Can you work to tight deadlines?
Yes. If you have a set timeframe, let us know early. We’ll do our best to align with your schedule and coordinate with other trades to keep your project moving.
+ MORE
Do you charge for consultations or quotes?
Initial discussions are usually free of charge. For detailed design work or complex assessments, we’ll advise you upfront if any fees apply.
Can you work with existing designs or plans?
Yes. We regularly collaborate with architects, builders, and designers to integrate glazed roofs into broader projects.
Who installs your glazed roofs?
All installations are carried out by the Douglas team. We’ll let you know who to expect on site, and you can meet our installers on the team page.
Can you coordinate with other trades?
Yes. We often work alongside builders, electricians, and landscapers to make sure your glazed roof is seamlessly integrated.
How accurate are the measurements?
Every glazed roof is measured and manufactured to the millimetre, ensuring a perfect fit.

FURTHER INFO
What warranties are included?
All Douglas projects include our Limited Liability Warranty (2 years workmanship and labour). For glazed roofs specifically:
- 10-year warranty on powder coating
- 10-year warranty on polycarbonate glazing
- 2-year workmanship and labour warranty
We’ll provide care and user guides at installation, and you can view our full Warranty Statement here.
What are the environmental credentials?
Glazed roofs are designed for durability, reducing the need for replacement. Aluminium frames are recyclable, and stainless steel fittings ensure long service life. By blocking solar heat in summer and retaining warmth in winter, glazed roofs also improve energy efficiency.
It’s important to note that no outdoor living fabrics used in roof systems, shades, or awnings are currently recyclable in New Zealand or Australia. Suppliers are working on long-term end-of-life solutions, and many fabrics are produced under strict EU environmental and health regulations. We can help you check the details for your chosen glazing or fabric.

Where are glazed roofs made?
Frames are fabricated in New Zealand using locally extruded aluminium. The polycarbonate glazing is imported, while design, fabrication, and installation are handled by the Douglas team in Hawke’s Bay.
Can I see glazing options in the showroom?
Yes. Our Hastings showroom features a working model with clear, grey tint, and opal translucent glazing so you can see the differences for yourself.
Have you won awards for outdoor living projects?
Yes. Douglas is a multi-award-winning Hawke’s Bay company, recognised nationally and internationally for outdoor living solutions, including roof systems, blinds, awnings, and shades.
