What sizes and spans are possible?
Retractable roofs can span up to 13m wide with projections of up to 10m. For larger spaces, we join modules to cover almost any area, from compact decks to large commercial courtyards.
What colour options are available?
Frames can be powder-coated in a wide range of Dulux colours, giving you flexibility to match or contrast with your home.

Can I add blinds, lighting, heaters & home automation to a roof system?
Yes. Roof systems can be enhanced with additional features like blinds for weather protection and privacy, integrated LED lighting, outdoor heaters, and even smart home automation. We’ll discuss these options with you during the design stage to ensure everything works seamlessly together.

How long does installation take?
Installation typically takes 2–3 days depending on size and site conditions.

Who installs your retractable roofs?
All installations are carried out by the Douglas team. Our installers are friendly, professional, and well-known across Hawke’s Bay. When you book your project, we’ll let you know who is scheduled, so you can feel confident about who will be working at your place. You can also meet the team on our website before installation day.
Can you coordinate with other trades?
Yes. We work closely with electricians, builders, and landscapers to ensure smooth project delivery.
How accurate are the measurements?
Every retractable roof is measured and fabricated to the millimetre, ensuring a flawless fit.

What warranties are included?
Douglas provides a 2-year workmanship and labour warranty, plus additional system warranties:
- 10-year warranty on powder coating
- 10-year warranty on PVC fabric
- 5-year warranty on mechanical parts
- 2-year workmanship and labour

What are the environmental credentials?
Retractable roofs are designed to last, reducing the need for replacement. The materials include recyclable aluminium framing and stainless steel components for long-term durability. By blocking solar heat in summer and helping retain warmth in winter, retractable roofs also support energy efficiency in your home or business.
As it stands, any outdoor fabrics used in roof systems, shades, or awnings are not currently recyclable in New Zealand at end-of-life (this applies to our products and anyone else’s). Our suppliers are known to be working on end-of-life solutions, and many of our fabrics are manufactured under stringent EU environmental and health regulations, covering the full product life cycle. If you’d like details for the specific fabric you’re considering, we can help you check the supplier’s information.

How do I clean and care for a retractable roof?
- Clean fabric with mild soapy water – avoid harsh chemicals.
- Rinse thoroughly and allow fabric to dry before retracting.
- Wipe frames with a damp cloth and check moving parts regularly.
- Schedule maintenance checks if you notice any stiffness or wear.

Where are retractable roofs made?
It depends on the system. Some components are sourced internationally, while fabrication and installation are handled by the Douglas team here in Hawke’s Bay. We’ll confirm details for your chosen system when we discuss your project.

Yes. Our Hastings showroom features a working retractable roof system so you can experience how it feels to open and close it, and view colour and fabric options.
