Retractable shade adds texture and form to new extension
The project
The Curtis family already had a covered outdoor area. For their new deck extension they wanted a retractable shade solution to give flexibility to the new space. They were after something that would work with the schist columns and match with existing house colours.

The Douglas Innovation solution
We worked together with the builder who was doing the design, build and installation of the beautiful schist columns. Based on the plans for these, we custom designed the aluminium pergola to be attached directly to the top of the columns.
The pergola itself was manufactured here in Hawke’s Bay, and colours for the powder coating were selected to match the home’s exterior décor. This Wave Sail shade system was customised by the Douglas team to open and close on a tensioned cord and pulley system. Using high-quality stainless-steel componentry we were able to allow for a smooth slide and durability.
A Wave Sail adds texture and allows diffuse light while still providing shade and protection from UV rays. As a retractable, there is flexibility to allow as much sun as wanted into this beautiful sunny Hawke’s Bay deck.
The retractable Wave Sail worked well in this space because we were involved early on and could design the pergola to custom fit the feature columns.
