Transforming a Classic Clipper: A Timeless Makeover
Restoring a vintage boat is always a special kind of challenge—and a privilege.
This Clipper, a stunning example of classic maritime design, offered us a unique opportunity to showcase our expertise in heritage restoration. With deep ties to New Zealand’s boating history, the project was about more than just updating an old vessel—it was about preserving legacy while enhancing comfort and function.
Working alongside Tubeworks and TopFab , we set out to refresh the boat’s interior and back roof cover with a fully custom design, tailored to the owners’ needs. The goal was to create a perfect balance of style, durability, and practicality. The result? A light, spacious, and stylish retreat for the owners to enjoy for years to come.
Restoration in Stages
Our clients were after a restoration in stages, beginning with a return to the original aesthetic, as a previous Bimini frame had altered the distinctive design of this classic Clipper. They sourced original pencil drawings from the archives, and together we worked to recreate the Bimini with a single hoop frame and centre stay for support. Richard from Tubeworx crafted the new hoop in stainless steel with custom mounts. With no original dimensions to work from, we collaborated closely with our clients to scale and shape the structure accurately – and Richard absolutely nailed it. It was a rewarding process to work through together, setting the foundation for the rest of the restoration.
Crafted Canvas & Clear Vision
Next, we tailored a new Recasens acrylic canvas Bimini cover in Blanco. The choice of white was deliberate, aiming to restore the timeless elegance these Clippers are known for. We trialed several white canvas options before settling on Recasens Blanco.
The Bimini was completed with three removable clear windows, designed to follow the boat’s lines. Reinforced and bound in the same canvas, they integrate beautifully. YKK open-ended zips and stainless steel Stayput fasteners were used in strategic locations to enhance protection and ease of use – a must when operating on the water. Each window can be securely rolled up or completely removed and stored in custom-designed white acrylic binding sleeves—providing an adaptable solution for both protection and open-air enjoyment.
The clears can be used in any combination without compromising the structure, offering full flexibility in all conditions.
Curtains, Covers & Clean Lines
Deviating from the current 80s tracked curtains, the new window coverings add a modern twist. Tailored from Recasens Blanco and reinforced and bound, they attach using black/brass durables. When removed, the fittings blend into the timber interior, leaving a clean finish. The curtains can be easily rolled and stowed for unobstructed views.
Tailored Upholstery & Quilted Detail
The original diamond-patterned wall and ceiling coverings were in great condition, so we carefully rejuvenated them. Historic photos showed HF-welded quilting on the squabs, so we created a custom bar and test samples to help our clients select the exact quilt grid. New foam was cut and upholstered to match, ensuring alignment across all seating and helm positions. The result is a refined, comfortable interior that honours the Clipper’s heritage.
Flooring & Final Touches
We replaced the tired marine carpet with Teak Cream Marine Tuft Carpet from TopFab. Soft underfoot and highly durable, it’s resistant to salt, mold, stains, and chlorine, and features Hydrabak technology for efficient drainage. While a full flooring replacement is planned for the future, this interim upgrade enhances both function and comfort.
Honouring NZ Maritime History
A highlight for our team was working on this piece of New Zealand maritime history. Commissioned for a royal visit in the 1970s, this Clipper is believed to have been named in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with initials “E R” referencing her title. Techniques like HF quilting and hand-bound details added a sense of craftsmanship and nostalgia to the process.
A Job Well Done – In Their Words
The owners were thrilled with the transformation, sharing:
“Our Clipper feels brand new again. The light, fresh look is exactly what we wanted, and the quality is outstanding. We couldn’t be happier with the craftsmanship and attention to detail. Adam and Mark were excellent to liaise with throughout the entire process—patient, professional, and genuinely committed to helping us achieve our vision.”
From our perspective, this project was a pleasure to bring to life.
As the Douglas Innovation team put it:
“Restoring this Clipper was about more than just aesthetics; it was about creating a space that feels inviting, durable, and timeless. Every detail, from the quilted vinyl to the marine carpet, was chosen with care to ensure long-lasting enjoyment.”
